Parnate is prescribed for the treatment of major depression--thatis, a depressed moodthat lasts for at least 2 weeks and interferes with dailyfunctioning. Major depression ismarked by at least 4 of the following 8 symptoms: changes inappetite, changes in sleeppatterns, agitation or listlessness, loss of interest in usualactivities or a decrease in sexdrive, fatigue, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, slowed thinkingor difficultyconcentrating, and thoughts of suicide. Parnate is a member of the class of drugs known as monoamineoxidase (MAO)inhibitors. It works by increasing concentrations of the brainchemicals epinephrine,norepinephrine, and serotonin. |
